Why South Dakota Drivers Add the HAZMAT Endorsement

The H endorsement unlocks higher-paying loads across South Dakota — especially for drivers running freight in and out of Sioux Falls, Rapid City, and Aberdeen.

+$5K–$15K

Higher Annual Pay

HAZMAT-endorsed drivers typically earn thousands more per year than non-endorsed CDL drivers.

Top Priority for Fleets

Carriers in South Dakota routinely prioritize HAZMAT-endorsed applicants and pay sign-on bonuses to get them.

Under 3 hrs

Minimal Time Commitment

You can finish the FMCSA theory portion before lunch — and keep your current schedule untouched.

The HAZMAT endorsement order in South Dakota

Every state runs the TSA background check and the hazmat knowledge test, but not in the same order. This is South Dakota's, from the DPS's own rules.

Hazmat knowledge test with the state, plus a TSA threat assessment at an enrollment center before the H is issued. You must be 21.

Age and permit

Age: 18 for in-state driving; 21 to cross state lines or add the hazmat endorsement.

Permit hold: 14 days.

Will South Dakota accept online hazmat theory? Yes, by federal rule. Federal rule 49 CFR 380.703(i) says that state qualification requirements for theory instruction do not apply to providers offering that instruction only online. So your state accepts theory from any provider listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry, including ELDT365, and no state can require the online theory portion to come from a state-licensed school. States can add their own rules for the behind-the-wheel part, and several do; those are listed below. 49 CFR 380.703(i)

South Dakota HAZMAT Endorsement FAQ

Common questions from South Dakota CDL holders adding the H endorsement.

Is the ELDT365 HAZMAT course accepted in South Dakota?
Yes. ELDT365 is registered on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry (TPR). Every South Dakota DPS location accepts completion records submitted through the TPR, and we submit yours automatically the moment you finish.
Do I need a CDL before taking the HAZMAT course in South Dakota?
You don't need the CDL in hand to start the theory course, but you'll need a valid South Dakota CDL (Class A or Class B) before the DPS can add the H endorsement to your license. Most drivers take the HAZMAT theory training alongside or right after their CDL training.
How long does the South Dakota HAZMAT theory course take?
Most South Dakota drivers finish the HAZMAT theory in one sitting. The course is self-paced — pause and resume anytime on any device.
What happens after I finish the HAZMAT course?
Your completion is auto-uploaded to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. From there you complete your TSA fingerprint/background check and pass the HAZMAT written test at your local South Dakota DPS office. You don't need to bring a paper certificate — the DPS pulls your training record from the federal registry.
How much does the South Dakota HAZMAT endorsement cost in total?
ELDT365 covers the FMCSA-required theory training for $20. You'll also pay a TSA background check fee (paid directly to TSA) and whatever South Dakota DPS charges for adding an endorsement to a CDL. Those two fees vary and go directly to the TSA and SD state — not to us.
Can I take the South Dakota HAZMAT course on my phone?
Yes. ELDT365 is fully mobile-friendly. Many South Dakota drivers complete the HAZMAT course on their phone during breaks, layovers, or at home.
How much more will I earn with a HAZMAT endorsement in South Dakota?
Most HAZMAT-endorsed drivers earn an extra $5,000–$15,000 per year compared to non-endorsed CDL drivers — with fuel, chemical, and industrial freight lanes running through Sioux Falls, Rapid City, and Aberdeen being common HAZMAT routes in South Dakota. Actual earnings depend on the carrier, the freight, and your experience level.
