How to get your CDL in South Carolina, step by step

The order matters, and it is not the same in every state. This is South Carolina's order, from the SCDMV's own rules. Fees are on the SCDMV site; the steps below do not change often.

  1. 1
    Get a DOT medical certificate

    From a certified medical examiner.

  2. 2
    Finish ELDT theory online

Any TPR-registered provider. ELDT365 files your completion the moment you pass.

  3. 3
Pass the knowledge tests at SCDMV and get your CLP

    CLP valid one year.

  4. 4
    Hold the CLP 14 days

Federal minimum before the skills test.

  5. 5
    Complete behind-the-wheel training

    With a TPR-registered BTW provider.

  6. 6
    Take the skills test

At SCDMV or a certified third party. Do not fail it three times; the waits escalate.

Hazmat endorsement order in South Carolina

Pass the hazmat knowledge test and complete TSA fingerprinting; only U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents are eligible. A CDL with hazmat runs on a 5-year cycle instead of 8.

Will South Carolina accept online ELDT theory? Yes, by federal rule.

Federal rule 49 CFR 380.703(i) says that state qualification requirements for theory instruction do not apply to providers offering that instruction only online. So your state accepts theory from any provider listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry, including ELDT365, and no state can require the online theory portion to come from a state-licensed school. States can add their own rules for the behind-the-wheel part, and several do; those are listed below.

49 CFR 380.703(i) · FMCSA guidance on state-based training requirements

What South Carolina adds for the school part: No state licensing layer for theory. Any TPR-registered provider is accepted.
