ELDT training providers near me: which part actually has to be nearby?

Only half of it. Entry-Level Driver Training has a theory part and a behind-the-wheel part. Theory does not need to be near you: federal rules let a registered provider deliver it online, and the registry lists online providers without a state. Behind-the-wheel has to be in a real vehicle with a registered provider, so that is the search that should be local. The place to run it is the FMCSA Training Provider Registry at tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov, which filters by training type, your location and provider name. ELDT365 handles the theory for $20, starting with Class A.

Theory: online is accepted in every state

49 CFR 380.703 requires a provider to be licensed in any state where it does in-person training, then says state qualification rules for theory do not apply to a provider that offers theory only online. 49 CFR 380.707(b) requires the online content to be prepared or delivered by a qualified theory instructor. That is the whole federal test for online theory: a registered provider and a qualified instructor. Nothing about your state or your zip code. Your state licensing agency verifies your training by looking in the registry, and the registry record does not say where you were when you studied. The FMCSA FAQ adds that nothing in the rules stops you from getting training outside your state of domicile. So "near me" is the wrong filter for theory. The right filters are: on the registry, offers the course you need, and in the language you learn best in. ELDT365 is listed for Class A, Class B, the B to A upgrade, Passenger, School Bus and HAZMAT theory, in English and Spanish.

Behind-the-wheel: this is the local search

BTW training means you at the controls of a vehicle that requires the CDL you are getting, on a range and on a public road, with a BTW instructor. Appendix A rules out simulators. Both the range and road portions must come from the same provider. So you need a registered BTW provider within driving distance, or one you can travel to. Federal rules also let you train and take the skills test in a different state than the one that will license you, and your home state must accept the result, so a school across a state line is fine.

How to search the registry by location

 1. Go to tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov and open Find a Provider.
 2. Under Training Type, pick the class and the part you need. For BTW, choose Class A Behind-the-Wheel or Class B Behind-the-Wheel, or the Passenger or School Bus BTW option. HAZMAT is theory only.
 3. Under Location, use My Location or type a city, then set the distance.
 4. Results are split into In-Person, Online and Traveling Provider tabs. Your BTW search lives on the In-Person tab; a traveling provider comes to a site near you.
 5. Choose Public, Private or Both. Private means the provider trains only its own employees or students, so you cannot just enroll.

There is also a download of all training locations if you want to sort the list yourself. The FMCSA warns that some providers only sell BTW bundled with their own theory, so ask before you pay if you already did theory elsewhere.

What a registry listing shows

Each location shows the provider name and address, the training types it is registered for and whether each is theory, BTW or both, whether it is in-person, online or traveling, and whether it is public or private. If FMCSA has issued a Notice of Proposed Removal, a banner says so, and the provider must tell its trainees. The registry also publishes a list of locations under review and a list of removed locations. Training done after a removal date is invalid under 49 CFR 380.721, so check the list, not just the provider's own site.

How to verify any provider before you pay

Search the provider name on the registry and confirm the listing covers the exact training you are buying: the class, and theory or BTW. A provider listed for Class B theory is not registered for Class A BTW. Then check the removed and under-review lists. A certificate from a provider that is not registered for that course, or that was removed before your training date, does not get you to the skills test. Our walkthrough is at how to check an ELDT provider.

State rules and the one-year clock

Two things can trip a nearby search. First, states can add requirements above the federal minimum, such as minimum BTW hours or a school license, and can hold your skills test until you meet them. The FMCSA tells you to ask your state agency about that; our summary of each state's agency and rules is at ELDT requirements by state. Second, you must finish theory and BTW within one year of finishing whichever came first. Finding a BTW slot can take time, so start that search when you start theory, not after.

Questions drivers ask

Does my ELDT theory provider have to be in my state?

No. Online theory from any registered provider is accepted in every state. The registry does not list online theory providers by state.

Can I do behind-the-wheel in a different state than my license?

Yes. 49 CFR 383.79 lets the training state give you the skills test and requires your home state to accept it. Your home state can still add its own requirements before issuing the CDL.

What does "private" mean on the registry?

The provider trains only its own employees or enrolled students, such as a carrier or a school. You cannot walk in. Filter for Public if you need open enrollment.

I found a school that is not on the registry. Can I use it?

No. All ELDT must come from a registered provider. The FMCSA asks drivers to contact the TPR team if they are enrolled with a provider that is not listed.
