How to get your CDL in Wyoming, step by step

The order matters, and it is not the same in every state. This is Wyoming's order, from the WYDOT's own rules. Fees are on the WYDOT site; the steps below do not change often.

  1. 1
    Get a DOT medical certificate

From a certified medical examiner. Present it at your local driver exam office.

  2. 2
    Finish ELDT theory online

Any TPR-registered provider. ELDT365 files your completion the moment you pass.

  3. 3
Pass the knowledge tests at a driver exam office and get your CLP

No appointment needed. 80 percent to pass.

  4. 4
    Hold the CLP 14 days

Federal minimum before the skills test.

  5. 5
    Complete behind-the-wheel training

    With a TPR-registered BTW provider.

  6. 6
Schedule and prepay the skills test through oneWYO or your exam office and take it

With a WYDOT examiner, in your own representative vehicle.

Who issues the CDL

Wyoming Department of Transportation, Driver Services (WYDOT).

Official WYDOT CDL page ›

Age, permit hold, permit validity

Age: 18 for a CLP and in-state driving; 21 to cross state lines or haul hazmat.

Hold your permit: 14 days before the skills test.

Permit valid: 365 days; the CDL must be paid for and issued before it expires.

Who gives the skills test

WYDOT examiners give the skills test at state exam stations. Third-party examiners may only test their own employees, volunteers or students and cannot charge a fee.

Hazmat endorsement order in Wyoming

ELDT hazmat theory, then the hazmat knowledge test at the exam office, then the TSA threat assessment. Driver Services must hear from TSA before the hard-copy license with the H is released; you can take an interim CDL without the H while TSA reviews.

Will Wyoming accept online ELDT theory? Yes, by federal rule.

Federal rule 49 CFR 380.703(i) says that state qualification requirements for theory instruction do not apply to providers offering that instruction only online. So your state accepts theory from any provider listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry, including ELDT365, and no state can require the online theory portion to come from a state-licensed school. States can add their own rules for the behind-the-wheel part, and several do; those are listed below.

49 CFR 380.703(i) · FMCSA guidance on state-based training requirements

What Wyoming adds for the school part: No state licensing layer for theory. Any TPR-registered provider is accepted.
