Can you get a CDL online?

No. No state issues a commercial driver's license online, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. What you can do online is the theory half of Entry-Level Driver Training, because federal rules let a registered provider deliver theory over the internet. Everything else is in person: the knowledge test at your state licensing agency, behind-the-wheel training with a registered provider in a real truck, and the skills test. ELDT365 covers the online part for $20, in English or Spanish, starting with Class A theory.

What is legally online: ELDT theory

Since February 7, 2022, a first-time Class A or Class B applicant has to finish Entry-Level Driver Training from a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry before the skills test. The training has two parts, theory and behind-the-wheel. The theory part can be done online. 49 CFR 380.703 says a provider must be licensed in any state where it conducts in-person training, then carves out an exception for providers that offer theory instruction only online. 49 CFR 380.707(b) adds the condition: online content has to be prepared or delivered by a qualified theory instructor. The registry itself has an Online tab in its provider search.

Theory has no minimum hours. You cover every unit in the federal curriculum and pass a written assessment with at least 80 percent. At ELDT365 that is self-paced on your phone, and we file your completion to the registry the same day you pass. Whether online theory is accepted everywhere is covered in is online ELDT legit.

What is not online: the permit test

Before you can drive a truck in training you need a commercial learner's permit. 49 CFR 383.25 requires the CLP holder to have passed the general knowledge test, plus any endorsement tests, at the state. States give that test in written, verbal or computer form at a licensing office. No state gives it over the internet. The CLP is good for up to one year, and you cannot take the skills test in the first 14 days after it is issued. Details are in CLP requirements.

What is not online: behind-the-wheel training

The BTW half of ELDT is defined in 49 CFR 380.605 as training where you have actual control of the power unit, on a range and on a public road, with a BTW instructor. The curriculum in Appendix A says a simulation device cannot be used for it. So there is no online or video version of BTW. You do it with a registered provider, in a vehicle that requires the class of CDL you are getting, and both portions, range and road, come from the same provider. There is no federal minimum number of BTW hours, but the instructor has to document that you were proficient in every element. Theory and BTW can come from different providers, and the clock matters: you have one year from finishing the first portion to finish the second.

What is not online: the skills test

The skills test is a pre-trip inspection, basic control skills and an on-road drive, in that order, in a representative vehicle of your class, under on-street or combined on-street and off-street conditions. It is given by the state or a state-authorized third-party examiner, in person, in English, with no interpreter. Your state cannot even schedule it until it has verified electronically that your ELDT is in the registry. If you trained in another state, that state can give you the test and your home state must accept the result.

Questions drivers ask

Can I get my CDL permit online?

No. The knowledge test for the commercial learner's permit is given at your state licensing agency. Some states let you pre-apply or book online, but the test itself is at the office.

Is online ELDT theory accepted in every state?

Yes. The federal rule applies to all states, and the registry does not sort online theory by state. Some states add their own requirements on top, so check your state before you schedule the skills test.

Can I do behind-the-wheel training online or with a simulator?

No. Appendix A to Part 380 says a simulation device cannot be used for BTW training or to show proficiency. BTW is in a real vehicle with a registered instructor.

How much of the process is online then?

The theory, which at ELDT365 is about 2 hours for Class B and a bit longer for Class A, plus whatever your state lets you do online for appointments. The tests and the driving are in person.
