Free CDL pre-trip inspection checklist (printable PDF)
A one-page checklist in test order, with every area of the pre-trip and the key things to check. Print it, put it on the fridge, and walk through it out loud until it is automatic.
What is on the checklist
- Air brake check: governor cut-out, applied leak test, low air warning, spring brake pop-out.
- Parking brake and service brake checks.
- In-cab inspection: gauges and lights, emergency equipment, mirrors, wipers, heater and defroster, horns.
- Front of the truck and engine compartment: lights, fluid levels, hoses, leaks.
- Steering, wheels, suspension and brakes on the steer and drive axles.
- Side of the vehicle: lenses, mirrors, battery box, fuel and DEF tanks, frame.
- Coupling and trailer (Class A) or rear of the truck (Class B).
How to use it
- Go in the same order every time, the order your test site uses.
- For each item, point to it and say what you check it for, out loud.
- If your state allows the official checklist on test day, do not add your own notes to it.
