How to get your CDL in Montana, step by step

The order matters, and it is not the same in every state. This is Montana's order, from the MVD's own rules. Fees are on the MVD site; the steps below do not change often.

  1. 1
    Get a DOT medical certificate

From a medical examiner on the National Registry; most Class A, B, and C applicants need one.

  2. 2
    Finish ELDT theory online

Any TPR-registered provider. ELDT365 files your completion the moment you pass.

  3. 3
Pass the written tests at a driver license station and get your CLP

By appointment; pass General Knowledge before the other knowledge tests.

  4. 4
    Hold the CLP 14 days

Federal minimum before the skills test; the CLP lasts one year.

  5. 5
    Complete behind-the-wheel training

    With a TPR-registered BTW provider.

  6. 6
Book the skills test online and take it

Pre-trip, basic control, and road test in order at an MVD CDL testing location, in a vehicle representative of your class.

Who issues the CDL

Montana Motor Vehicle Division (MVD).

Age, permit hold, permit validity

Age: 18 for an intrastate (Montana only) CDL; 21 for an interstate CDL, school bus, or hazmat.

Hold your permit: 14 days before the skills test.

Permit valid: One year, and all testing must be finished before the CLP expires.

Who gives the skills test

Skills tests at MVD CDL testing locations, booked through the MVD online appointment system, with an additional testing option through Helena College.

Hazmat endorsement order in Montana

TSA threat assessment and fingerprinting first; once the result is received you take the hazmat written test at an exam station, and the H follows.

Will Montana accept online ELDT theory? Yes, by federal rule.

Federal rule 49 CFR 380.703(i) says that state qualification requirements for theory instruction do not apply to providers offering that instruction only online. So your state accepts theory from any provider listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry, including ELDT365, and no state can require the online theory portion to come from a state-licensed school. States can add their own rules for the behind-the-wheel part, and several do; those are listed below.

49 CFR 380.703(i) · FMCSA guidance on state-based training requirements

What Montana adds for the school part: No state licensing layer for theory. Any TPR-registered provider is accepted.
